In-Network | Health Insurance GlossaryMembers of health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and preferred provider organizations (PPOs) are probably familiar with the term in-network. It refers to doctors and hospitals that are part of a HMO or PPO plan. These health care providers have agreed to provide their services either because they are employed by the managed care plan or because they want wider access to patients. In exchange, the HMO/PPO has some oversight of health care practices and the doctor or facility will also reduce their price for HMO/PPO patients. Accordingly, patients under a managed care plans receive full health coverage only if they receive care from in-network, or participating, health care providers.
