Georgia and much of the southeast will soon be heading into tornado season. In order to prepare, Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine has issued several tips to make sure Georgians are ready for the worst even though they hope for the best. Suggestions include checking your home insurance policy to make sure you're covered for the amounts and types of insurance you need and want. While damage from tornados and high strength winds are probably covered in your homeowners insurance policy, flooding is most likely not. Take a tip from last year's hurricane victims, don't be caught without flood insurance if there is any chance of flooding. Also, make an inventory list of all your personal belongings, photos or videotapes of your items are helpful when trying to prove you used to own things that were obliterated by a tornado. You should also check your home insurance policy and see if your personal effects are covered for Actual Cash Value (ACV) or replacement cost coverage. If you have ACV, you will only be covered for the amount your belongings are worth, not he amount it will cost to replace them. No matter what happens, have your agent's number and policy number handy and call immediately if your home sees and damages from severe weather.
