A debate has begun in the Colorado state Senate over the rights of life insurance providers and their rate setting practices. In a recent proposal, Sen. Brandon Shaffer is attempting to make it illegal for life insurance companies to deny a request for insurance or raise the rates of policyholders based on thioer travel to foreign countries deemed dangerous and/or illegal by the government. Opponents of the bill believe that the Senate should not interfere with the business practices of life insurance companies and insurers should not be responsible for the illegal actions of travelers. Shaffer says that visiting dangerous countries, whether or not the U.S. allows it's citizens to visit, has no proven bearing on a person's life expectancy and should not be used when factoring such in a life insurance policy.
