During a town hall meeting in New Port Richey, FL, homeowners will have the chance to vent about soaring home insurance rates and ask questions about ways to improve the situation in the state. State Sen. Mike Fasano calls the hikes outrageous and one of the most important issues facing our community today, and urges consumers to take a stand. The meeting will be held at Spartan Manor, 6121 Massachusetts Ave. on March 1, at 10 a.m.

The main topic at the meeting will be Florida Citizens Property Insurance, however private insurance issues will also be addressed. Citizens was created to help low-income Floridians to purchase home insurance, however the state-run insurer has become the largest in the state with prices that make even the most affluent homeowners wince.

Another item on the agenda besides hurricanes will be sinkholes. Most homeowners have no clue what to do with a sinkhole on their property and such a situation is a breeding ground for liability suits and property damage. Florida has an ombudsman in charge of sinkholes whose job it is to help homeowners avoid the need to hire a lawyer and lose as much as 33% of an insurance claim in legal fees.

Read more: Soaring insurance rates focus of meeting (Hernando Today) Hurricanes and sinkholes are causing homeowner insurance rates to soar, even those offered through Citizens Property Insurance Corp., Florida's insurer of last resort.
