Henry Waxman D-Calif. as the new chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee "in a coup that is expected to accelerate passage of energy, climate and health legislation backed by President-elect Barack Obama, the New York Times reports. Waxman will replace current Chair John Dingell D-Mich.

Pi Kapp fraternity house evacuated due to fire  The Pi Kappa Phi fraternity house, located at 4040 Walnut St., was evacuated at about 3:30 a.m. today when brothers reported seeing smoke billowing from a second-floor bedroom.

Mint Hill blaze damages house  No injuries were reported but a house was heavily damaged Sunday night in a Mint Hill fire. The fire was reported on Milton Morris Drive, in the Morris Farms subdivision. That is near Lawyers and Lebanon roads. According to authorities, the family living at the house was able to escape safely. The cause of the blaze is listed as accidental. There is no damage estimate.
